No. 10 W&L Women's Lacrosse Drops Shenandoah, 9-6

WINCHESTER, Va. – The No. 10 Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team had six different players score in the first half en route to a 9-6 victory over Shenandoah on Wednesday evening at Sprint Field.

First-year attacker Annie McCorry scored the first goal of the contest off of a free position shot for the Hornets (5-2, 1-1) at the 19:40 mark, but W&L (6-1, 3-0) responded with a 4-0 run after sophomore attacker Sara Holland (Houston, Texas / M.B. Lamar) found the back of the net 31 seconds later off of a free position to tie the game, 1-1.

Junior attacker Melissa Coggins (St. John's, Fla. / Bartram Trail) and first-year attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) each tallied a goal during the spurt, and then sophomore midfielder Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park Country School) notched the Blue and White's fourth goal with 11:21 on the clock. First-year attacker Cortney Gensemer scored Shenandoah's second goal off of an assist from senior midfielder Liz Bereit at the 9:39 mark to cut W&L's lead to two (4-2).

Sophomore midfielder Olivia Sisson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) then extended the Generals' lead, 5-2, when she found the back of the net off of an assist from Coggins with 9:11 remaining in the first half. 

Bereit scored an unassisted goal at the 5:36 mark (5-3), but sophomore attacker Lauren Procaccino (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) tallied a goal with three seconds remaining and the Generals took a 6-3 lead into halftime.

Gensemer opened up the second half of action with a goal off of a free position shot at the 27:05 mark to make the score 6-4. Castelo notched her second goal of the game with 17:48 on the clock (7-3).

Senior midfielder Sammy Yates (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) then scored the Generals' final two goals of the game at the 12:34 and 5:18 marks. Shenandoah scored the last two goals of the contest to reach the final margin.

For the game, Washington and Lee out-shot Shenandoah, 26-11, and picked up 18 ground balls as opposed to the Hornets' 12. The Generals also held the edge in draw controls, 9-7.

Senior goalkeeper Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) saw all 60 minutes of action and registered four saves. First-year goalie Rachel Levy suffered the loss for Shenandoah, playing all 60 minutes and finishing with 12 saves.

Castelo and Yates paced the Blue and White with two goals each, while Holland dished out two assists. Gensemer led the Hornets with three goals and Bereit had one assist.

W&L returns to the field on Saturday when it travels to Lynchburg for a 7:00 pm contest.
