Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team left 10 runners on base in a 4-1 loss to Stevenson on Wednesday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
The Mustangs (1-5-1) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Junior first baseman Ian Eberly (Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) led off with a single up the middle. After a sacrifice bunt to move Eberly to second, senior center fielder Brody Tennant (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) walked to put runners at first and second. Both runners advanced a base on a groundout, and then a two-out bloop single to right field by junior designated hitter Craig Joseph (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) scored the two runs.
Tennant extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third inning. He opened the frame by reaching on an error and then stole second. He advanced to third on a ground out, and then came home on a wild pitch by senior Andrew Lamb (Lexington, S.C./Hammond).
The Generals (3-5) notched their only run of the contest in the fourth. Senior shortstop Taylor Rowe (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) singled through the left side to start the inning, and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Following a walk to senior left fielder Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster), sophomore right fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. Sophomore first baseman Jonny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) brought Rowe home with a sacrifice fly to center.
Stevenson scored its final run in the eighth inning. Tennant reached base and moved to third on an error, and then came home on a sacrifice fly by Joseph.
W&L finished the game with four hits, and also walked five times. The Blue and White left a runner on base in seven of the nine innings, and had just one hit (1-for-16) with a runner on base.
Junior Ryan Martin (Westminster, Md./Westminster) earned the victory for the Mustangs to improve to 1-0. He threw 5.0 innings, giving up one run on two hits. He also had four strikeouts and five walks. First-year Dan Williams (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) earned the first save of his collegiate career with a scoreless ninth.
Lamb (0-1) took the loss for the Generals, pitching 4.0 innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks. Seniors Drew Shott (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) and Cory Smith (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) and first-year David Van Geluwe (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) tossed the final 5.0 innings, giving up one unearned run on five hits.
The W&L defense kept the team in the contest. Junior center fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) made a diving catch in right center in the top of the third inning to save a potential run, and W&L also turned three double plays over the course of the game. Junior designated hitter Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) had two (2-of-4) of the team's four hits.
The Generals travel to Guilford on Saturday for a doubleheader, starting at 12:00 pm.
