Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team recorded just two hits in losing at 14th-ranked Shenandoah on Tuesday, 9-0.
The Hornets' (7-2, 5-1 ODAC) Ryan Mossman (2-0) pitched a complete game shutout to earn the victory. Along with only giving up two hits, he struck out six batters and walked only two.
Shenandoah took a 1-0 lead over the Generals (3-4, 1-3 ODAC) in the bottom of the third inning on a RBI ground out by sophomore shortstop John Wilt. The Hornets extended the lead in the fifth to 2-0 on a one-run single by senior first baseman Michael Paul. Shenandoah pushed the advantage to 4-0 in the sixth. Senior designated hitter Nolan Overby had a RBI double to left, and then scored later in the inning on an error.
In the seventh, the Hornets added another run (5-0) when senior catcher Daniel Freshley scored on an error, and then Shenandoah put the game out of reach with four runs in the eighth.
Junior Kyle Tipping (Green Lane, Pa./The Hill School) pitched the first six innings for W&L and took the loss. He gave up four runs (three earned) on 11 hits, while walking one. Sophomore Anderson Baldy (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) threw 1.1 innings of relief, allowing four runs on one hit and five walks. First-year Tyler Murphy (Chesapeake, Va./Greenbrier Christian Academy) went the final 0.2 innings. He allowed one unearned run on one walk.
Junior catcher Andrew Head (Edmond, Okla./Bishop McGuinness) had the only two hits for the Generals, finishing the day 2-for-3. He had a single in the top of the third and a double in the top of the ninth.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they host Stevenson for a 3:00 pm contest.
