Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning on its way to a 4-1 victory over 12th-ranked Shenandoah on Thursday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
The teams were tied at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth frame. After a strikeout to start the inning, sophomore third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) singled through the right side. Following a fly out by sophomore right fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion), junior designated hitter Michael DeMatteis (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) walked to put two runners on with two outs.
Sophomore first baseman Jonny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) then doubled down the left field line to plate Weston, and senior second baseman Nick Biumi (Cummings, Ga./Lambert) pushed the Generals' (3-1, 1-0 ODAC) lead to 4-1 on a two-run double down the left field line.
W&L used five pitchers in the contest, as it adjusted to playing its first game in over a month. Senior Drew Shott (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) threw 2.0 innings of relief to earn his first victory of the year. He gave up just one hit and struck out two.
Senior Cory Smith (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) came on with two on and no one out in the top of the eighth inning. He retired the next six batters, including one strikeout, to close out the victory and record his second save of the season. He now has eight saves in his career, which moves him to solo second on the Blue and White's all-time list. He is only one save away from tying Jim Plantholt's program record of nine.
Sophomore Tyler Hott (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) took the loss for Shenandoah to fall to 0-1. He pitched 6.0 innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits and two walks. He also struck out four batters.
The Hornets scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. Junior second baseman Billy Arens (Purcellville, Va./Homeschool) came home on an error by the shortstop with one out. W&L tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by senior left fielder Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster).
The Generals next play a doubleheader at Randolph-Macon on Sunday, starting at 12:30 pm.
