Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – Washington and Lee shot just 23.3 percent (7-30) from the floor in the second half in falling to Lynchburg by a score of 65-59 in ODAC women's basketball on Saturday at Turner Gym.
The Generals (14-5, 7-5) shot a sizzling 55.6 percent (15-27) from the floor and 71.4 percent (5-7) from beyond the arc in the first half, but W&L was outscored 12-1 at the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes and the Hornets (15-6, 10-2) carried a 37-36 lead into the halftime break.
W&L held a 40-39 lead at 17:30 following a layup by sophomore guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly), but the Generals then went ice cold from the floor, hitting just two of their next 16 shots as LC went on a 19-6 run to grab a 58-46 lead at the 6:29 mark. Sophomore guard Charmaine Hairston did most of the damage on the offensive end for the Hornets, scoring seven points during the stretch.
Lynchburg maintained a 12-point lead (60-48) with 3:27 left, before the Generals made a run at the end that fell just short. First-year Andrea Ferrero (Ridgefield, Conn. / Ridgefield) and Clifford both drilled triples as W&L cut it to a five-point game (63-58) with a 10-3 run. However, junior guard Sammi Goldsmith nailed 5-of-6 free throws in the final 55 seconds to hold off the W&L rally.
The Generals' hot shooting in the first half led to a seven-point (27-20) advantage midway through the opening stanza, but Lynchburg used their edge at the foul line to grab the lead back in improving to 15-6 overall and 10-2 in the ODAC.
Lynchburg shot just 33.9 percent (21-62) from the field, but the Hornets hit 21-of-27 free throws (.778) as opposed to 7-of-11 (.636) for W&L.
Clifford led the Blue & White with 15 points, while first-year guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) and Ferrero finished with 11 points each. Junior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) added 10 points and six rebounds.
Senior forward Shannon Allan's 15 points paced the Hornets. Senior forward Lauren Penley notched 13 points and Goldsmith notched 11 markers. Penley grabbed nine boards and Allan had eight rebounds.
Washington and Lee will be in action again on Tuesday when it hosts Randolph-Macon for a 7:00 pm contest.
