Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore midfielder Hayley Soutter (McLean, Va. / Langley) scored three goals, including the game-winner with 2:15 left in double-overtime to lead the No. 12 Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory over Mary Washington at Battleground Turf on Monday afternoon.
Sophomore midfielder Olivia Sisson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) scored a pair of goals in the opening 14:15 of the game as the Generals (2-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the 12:51 mark of the first half.
Senior midfielder Emily Atkinson tallied the Eagles' first goal with 12:36 remaining on the clock off of a free position shot, and each team traded a goal in the final 11:42 as the Generals carried a 6-2 lead into the break.
Sisson opened up the second half with her third goal of the game at the 22:14 mark, but UMW scored three-straight to make it a 7-5 game with 12:29 left in the game. Soutter stopped the rally briefly with a goal at the 10:54 mark. However, the Eagles used another three goal run in the final 5:18 to tie the game at 8-8.
First-year midfielder Holly Hudson scored the final two goals, including the tying goal with just 19 seconds remaining in regulation.
In the first overtime, sophomore midfielder Sabrina Elliott found the back of the net off of a free position shot to give Mary Washington its first lead (9-8) at the 3:40 mark, but junior attacker Carly Taglienti (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) tied the game back up, 9-9, on an unassisted goal with just four seconds remaining in the first half of the first overtime period.
Neither team scored in the second-half of the first overtime or the first half of the second overtime until Soutter tallied the game-winner at the 2:15 mark on a free position shot.
For the game, Mary Washington out-shot Washington and Lee, 31-16, but W&L won 18 draw controls, as opposed to UMW's six.
Senior goalkeeper Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) got the win for the Generals, seeing all 69:45 of action and posting 11 saves. First-year goalie Kelsey Welsh suffered the loss for the Eagles, playing 50:23 in goal and finishing with two saves, while senior goalkeeper Taylor Paige saw 19:22 in net for UMW and made one save.
Soutter tallied three goals and Sisson scored two, while junior attacker Melissa Coggins (St. John's, Fla./Bartram Trail) notched two assists. Soutter also had seven draw controls.
Hudson led the Eagles with three goals and picked up a game-high six ground balls.
The Generals return to action on Saturday when they travel to Brooklandville, Md. to take on No. 8 Franklin & Marshall for a 1:00 pm contest.
