W&L Women's Lacrosse Opens Season with a 12-7 Victory Over CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Sophomore attacker Lauren Procaccino (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) ignited a 7-1 run en route to the No. 12 Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team defeating Christopher Newport, 12-7, at Captains Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.

Procaccino scored an unassisted goal at the 8:09 mark in the opening half to take the lead, 5-4, for W&L (1-0). Sophomore midfielder Hayley Soutter (McLean, Va. / Langley) followed with another unassisted goal with 5:14 left on the clock.  CNU (0-1) responded with a tally by sophomore attacker Meaghan Galvin with 4:17 left in the first stanza to cut the lead to 6-5. Soutter and Procaccino ended the half with two more unassisted goals at the 3:39 and 3:16 marks. The Generals took the 8-5 lead into intermission.

Soutter and Procaccino opened the second half of play with three goals for the Blue and White. Soutter scored a goal at the 25:48 mark and netted her fourth goal of the game with 15:43 left on the clock. Procaccino tallied her fifth goal just 2:20 later to make the score 11-5.

First-year midfielder Kedron Walsh responded with a goal at the 11:27 mark to cut W&L's lead to five, but junior attacker Carly Taglienti (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) hit the back of the net off of an assist from sophomore attacker Sara Holland (Houston, Texas / M.B. Lamar) with 6:10 left in the game.

For the game, the Blue and White held an edge in shots (23-18) and draw controls (11-10).

Senior goalkeeper Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) got the win for the Generals making nine saves, seeing all 60 minutes of action. Junior goalie Hanna Slough suffered the loss for the Captains, playing all 60 minutes and making seven saves.

Procaccino led W&L with five goals, while Soutter netted four. Taglienti posted two goals and four draw controls.

Sophomore attacker Lindsay Weaver and Walsh paced the Captains with two goals apiece, while sophomore defender Mariah Ginebra picked up a game-high four ground balls.

The Generals return to action on February 21 when they travel to Mary Washington for a 3:00 pm contest.
