Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — Bluefield State scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning on its way to a 9-3 victory over the Washington and Lee baseball team on Wednesday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
The Generals (2-1) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore outfielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./The Hill School) led off the inning with a double down the left field line. After back-to-back strikeouts for W&L, senior second baseman Nick Biumi (Cummings, Ga./Lambert) singled to left to bring home Wasson. Junior outfielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) followed with a one-run single up the middle to push the advantage to 2-0.
The Big Blues (3-0) scored one run in the top of the sixth, before grabbing the lead in the seventh. With runners on first and second, first-year pitcher David Van Geluwe (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) threw a wild pitch to the backstop. Junior catcher Andrew Head (Edmond, Okla./Bishop McGuiness) could not find the ball, and sophomore outfielder Boston New (Colfax, N.C./High Point Christian) scored from second to tie the game, 2-2.
Bluefield State scored its second run of the inning on another wild pitch, this time by sophomore Anderson Baldy (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep). Baldy then walked three of the next four batters to force in an additional run (4-2). The Big Blues scored their final two tallies of the inning on a single by sophomore catcher Sam Harris (Mount Airy, N.C./Fairmont State).
The Blue and White cut the deficit to 6-3 when senior outfielder Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) scored on an error by the shortstop in the bottom of the eighth, but Bluefield State totaled three runs in the top of the ninth to reach the final margin.
Van Geluwe (0-1) took the loss for the Generals, pitching 2.0 innings of relief. He gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk. Junior Kyle Tipping (Green Lane, Pa./The Hill School) started for W&L, throwing 4.0 scoreless innings.
First-year Kenneth Broeker (La Vergne, Tenn./La Vergne) pitched one inning of relief to earn his first collegiate victory for the Blues. Junior Ridge Sibold (Ballard, W.Va./James Monroe) started the game, tossing 5.0 innings. He gave up two runs on six hits, while striking out four.
Biumi led the Generals at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Myer went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
W&L hosts Marymount for a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 12:00 pm.
