Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior guard Zach Hunter (Newport News, Va. / Woodside) hit a running layup with just under one second remaining to lift Bridgewater to a 46-44 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's basketball action on Saturday at the Warner Center. It was the Generals' second straight loss in the final five seconds of a game, having fell at Eastern Mennonite, 78-77, on Wednesday.
The Generals (2-6, 0-2) trailed by as many as 11 points (37-26) in the second half, but chipped away at the scoreboard despite dismal shooting. Defense was the key to the comeback for W&L, holding the Eagles (3-2, 2-0) to just one point from the 6:16 mark until Hunter's game-winner in the final second of the contest. The Generals used a 9-0 run over the final 4:56 to knot the game at 44-44 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo. / Chaminade College Prep) with seven seconds remaining.
Kleinlein's triple was W&L's first in the game, as the Generals finished 1-of-15 from behind the arc.
The two teams combined to shoot just 14-of-47 (.297) from the floor in the first half, but the Generals outscored the Eagles 9-0 at the foul line in the first half and BC held a slim 21-19 lead at the break. BC opened the second half with a 9-1 run to take a 30-22 lead just 3:15 into the second stanza. W&L got no closer than four points (30-26) the rest of the half until making the run that knotted the game at 44-all with seven seconds left, setting up Hunter's heroics.
W&L finished 13-of-46 (.283) from the field and 17-of-30 (.567) from the foul line. Bridgewater shot just 32.7 percent (18-55) from the floor and was outscored 17-5 at the charity stripe.
First-year forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) paced W&L with a career-high 19 points and nine rebounds. He finished 5-of-6 from the field and 9-of-13 from the foul line. First-year forward Joe Sherwood (Madison, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) tallied 10 points and seven boards, while W&L's leading scorer coming into the contest, junior forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C. / Ravenscroft), was limited to just five points on 0-for-9 shooting from the floor.
Bridgewater was led by first-year forward Marcus Curry (Greensboro, N.C. / Northern Guilford) and senior forward Ed Reddick (Virginia Beach, Va. / Kellam), who totaled 11 points each.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Averett at 7:00 pm.
