W&L Men's Basketball Drops a 92-52 Decision to Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholic closed the first half with a 33-8 run and cruised to a 92-52 win over Washington and Lee in men's basketball on Tuesday evening at the DuFour Athletic Center.

The Generals (2-3) never led in the contest, but trailed by just six points (14-8) following a layup by junior forward John Martin (Huntsville, Ala. / Randolph) with 12:38 remaining in the first half.  The Cardinals (4-1) then held W&L scoreless for the next 6:18, going on a 10-0 run to assume a 24-8 lead with 7:18 left in the half.  W&L connected on just two shots from the floor for the remainder of the first half in trailing 47-16 at the break.  The Generals never threatened in the second stanza, dropping their third straight contest after beginning the season 2-0.

W&L committed 25 turnovers in the game and shot 44.8 percent (13-29) from the floor.  Junior forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C. / Ravenscroft) led the way with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting.  First-year forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) added 10 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the foul line and Martin chipped in a career-high eight points on 3-of-3 shooting from the field.

Catholic finished the game 34-of-63 (.540) from the field with 25 assists and just eight turnovers.  Sophomore guard Louis Khouri paced the Cardinals with 23 points on 9-of-10 shooting, while sophomore forward Corey Stanford had 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting.  Junior guard Bryson Fonville added seven points, 13 rebounds and five steals.

Washington and Lee will now break for the holiday, before returning to action on Sunday when it hosts William Peace for a 3:00 pm contest.
