W&L Women's Lacrosse Edges Bridgewater, 9-7

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team out-shot Bridgewater, 27-14, to claim a 9-7 win on Wednesday evening at Watt Field.

Just three minutes into the contest, first-year midfielder Emily Conway (Darien, Conn./Greenwich Academy) opened W&L's (6-8, 6-2) scoring with an unassisted goal to go up 1-0.  First-year midfielder Carli Bafford (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) put BC (5-10, 3-6) on the board at the 25:37 mark (1-1) after being awarded a free position shot. 

In the next 2:12, W&L pulled ahead by two, 3-1, as junior attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks School) and Conway each scored. Bafford then notched the Eagles' second goal with another chance from the eight-meter mark to close the gap to one (3-2) with 22:25 on the clock.

The Generals answered back with three-straight tallies by 5:12, taking their largest lead of the game (6-2). Junior attacker Katie Freeman (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) closed out the half with a BC goal at the 3:23 mark, giving the Blue and White a 6-3 advantage at the break. 

Bafford pulled the Eagles' deficit to just two (6-4) with an unassisted player-up score 2:02 into the second period. However, Conway fired off back-to-back unassisted goals in the following 4:07, pushing the Generals' lead back to four (8-4) with 23:51 remaining.

The Eagles continued to keep the game close as junior attacker Taylor Chamberlain (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) found the back of net twice by the 13:15 mark, cutting the lead to 8-6. Each team scored once more in the contest, but the Generals were able to hold off any comeback opportunities to claim the 9-7 victory.

For the game, W&L held an advantage in ground balls, 23-14, and draw controls, 11-7. 

In net for the Blue and White was sophomore Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), who collected four saves and seven goals-against in 60 minutes of action. Sophomore Laura Reynolds (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Denis J. O'Connell) tallied 12 saves, nine goals-against and four ground balls while spending the entire contest in the cage for BC.

Conway led all scoring with four goals and one assist for W&L. Klein added three goals and junior attacker Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris-Mendham) registered one goal, five draw controls and two ground balls. On the defensive end, junior Olive Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park) picked up three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers and junior Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn./Darien) claimed three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. 

For the Eagles, Bafford paced the offense with four goals. Chamberlain found the back of the net twice, and Freeman recorded the final score.

W&L returns to the field on Saturday, when it travels to Guilford for a 2:00 pm game.
