GREENSBORO, N.C. – First-year guards Javon McDonald (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) and Clay McLean (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) shot a combined 12-of-22 from the floor (.546), but the remainder of the team shot just 6-of-28 (.214) as Washington and Lee fell to Guilford, 68-49, on Wednesday evening at Ragan-Brown Field House.

The Quakers (16-6, 10-3) threatened to pull away early, jumping out to a 14-6 lead 7:52 into the game on a three-pointer by senior guard Gabriel Lowder.  However, McDonald kept the Generals (12-10, 5-8) in the game by drilling five three-pointers and scoring all 18 of his points in the opening half. 

W&L trailed just 17-13 at the 9:52 mark after McDonald hit 1-of-2 from the free throw line, but Guilford used a 9-2 run over the next 3:36 to push out to an 11-point (26-15) lead with 6:16 left in the first half en route to a 33-23 lead at the break.

The Quakers maintained a double-digit lead until a three-pointer by junior guard Jeremy Adkins (Huntington, W.Va./Spring Valley) pulled the Generals to within eight points (50-42) with 8:27 to play.  Sophomore guard Carson Sullivan drilled a triple the next time down and the Quakers led by no less than 11 points the rest of the way.

As a team, the Generals shot just 36.0 percent (18-50) from the floor and hit only 5-of-13 (.385) free throw attempts.  Guilford also claimed a 46-26 advantage on the boards.  McDonald finished 6-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-8 from three in scoring a team-best 18 markers.  McLean shot 6-of-12 overall, finishing with 15 points.  Sophomore forward Larry Whitaker (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) added six points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Guilford, which shot 41.1 percent (23-56) from the field, was led by Lowder's 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting.  Senior forward Brad Monroe, first-year guard Matt McCarthy and senior guard Gene Efird chipped in eight points each.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater for a 2:00 pm contest.
