W&L Women's Lacrosse Defeats Randolph-Macon, 18-8

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) scored a career-high six goals as she helped lead the No. 15 Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to an 18-8 win over Randolph-Macon on senior day at Watt Field Saturday.

Mathews wasted no time netting her first goal of the game, as she won the opening draw control and took it directly to the net to give the Generals (11-4, 8-0 ODAC) a 1-0 edge just 17 seconds into the contest.

Mathews added two more goals and an assist over the next 7:33, while senior attacker Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) added two goals and junior attacker Alli Shearin (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex Regional) contributed one marker as W&L jumped out to a 6-0 lead with 22:10 on the clock.

Shearin notched her goal off a pass from Mathews at the 28:07 mark, and Mathews added her second goal of the game just 27 seconds later to extend the Generals' lead to 3-0. Megargel found the net off a pass from junior attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) with 25:46 remaining in the opening half, and Mathews and Megargel then netted consecutive unassisted goals for the 6-0 advantage.

Randolph-Macon (7-9, 4-5 ODAC) got on the board at 19:46, when senior midfielder Elyse Cooper (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) scored off a pass from junior attacker Kelly Egan (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) to leave the score at 6-1. R-MC sophomore midfielder Emily Lynch (St. Inigoes, Md./Leonardtown) added an unassisted goal 43 seconds later, as the Yellow Jackets pulled to within four goals (6-2).

However, W&L netted the next four goals of the contest, including two goals from Megargel and one apiece from Mathews and McKaig as it pushed its lead back to eight goals (10-2) with 10:43 remaining in the first half.

R-MC's Lynch connected on a free-position shot with 9:19 on the clock to leave the score at 10-3, but the Generals closed the opening stanza on a 4-0 run to assume an 11-goal lead (14-3) at the break.

The Yellow Jackets came out strong to start the second half, as senior attacker Erin Clare Cassidy (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) and Lynch scored consecutive wrap-around goals to pull to within nine goals (14-5) with 25:27 remaining.

W&L used another string of goals, this time a 3-0 run, with goals from first-year attacker Alex Van Horn (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), first-year midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and senior midfielder Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) to assume its largest lead of the game at 17-5 with just over nine minutes remaining. R-MC scored three-consecutive goals in the closing minutes of the contest, but it was not enough as W&L claimed the 18-8 win, its seventh-consecutive victory over R-MC.

Mathews netted all six of her goals and one assist in the first half to lead the Generals with seven points. Megargel (4g), Van Horn (2g, 2a) and McKaig (1g, 3a) finished with four points apiece, while junior midfielder Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) added a game-high five draw controls.

Senior Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) and sophomore Alex Hamill (Darien, Conn./Darien) shared time in net, with Farrar earning the win in 48:07 of action. Farrar allowed five goals and stopped four shots, while Hamill allowed three goals and did not record a save.

R-MC was led by Egan, who finished with four points off of one goal and three assists. Lynch and Cooper added three goals apiece, while senior defender Stephanie Serena (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) forced a game-high four turnovers. Keeper senior Alex Flammia (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) played all 60:00, stopping 10 shots.

W&L concludes ODAC regular-season action on Thursday, traveling to face Randolph College at 4:00 pm.
