W&L Baseball Stifled by Southern Virginia, 2-0

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Southern Virginia senior Darrell Brown (Window Rock, Ariz./Window Rock) limited the Washington and Lee baseball team to just six hits in 9.0 innings as SVU blanked the Generals, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

Brown improved to 3-1 on the season with the complete-game shutout. He did not walk a batter and had five strikeouts, while all six hits that he surrendered were singles.

W&L's (4-4)) pitching staff was nearly as good, as four Generals combined to allow just two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts. Senior starter Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) wound up on the losing end for W&L, as he allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

SVU (8-1) jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning as sophomore first baseman Josh Linn (Muskogee, Okla./Bacone College) drove in sophomore Dale Brown (Mesa, Ariz./Highland) with a single to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, SVU's lead grew to 2-0 when Dale Brown drove in senior Jake Johnson (Phoenix, Ariz./Glendale CC), who had previously tripled, with a base hit.

W&L managed to put runners on base in the fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings, but the Generals were unable scratch across a run.

The Generals' best scoring chance came in the sixth inning when back-to-back singles by sophomore shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and sophomore first baseman Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) put runners on the corners with two outs. However, sophomore catcher Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat.

Maragos and Stutts each finished 2-for-4 for W&L, while senior outfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) and sophomore second baseman Chris Nault (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) each singled.

For SVU, Johnson finished 3-for-4 with a run scored, Dale Brown was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI and Linn finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they host Lynchburg in an ODAC doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
