Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 1 Salisbury women's lacrosse team
scored seven unanswered goals over the end of the first half and
opening of the second half as it went on to defeat No. 11
Washington and Lee, 12-9, on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
W&L (4-2) struck early, as sophomore midfielder
Ashley Barnes (Annapolis,
Md./St. Mary's) found the net off a pass from senior attacker
Kate Speare
(Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) to put the Generals up, 1-0, just
41 seconds into the contest.
Salisbury (6-0) responded with an unassisted marker from junior
midfielder Allie Wheatley (Cambridge, Md./Salisbury School) to knot
the score at 1-1 at the 28:52 mark, but the Generals tallied goals
from senior attacker Wilton Megargel
(Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) and senior midfielder Kate Donnelly
(Houston, Texas/St. John's School) to take a 3-1 lead with 21:49
remaining in the opening half.
Both teams exchanged a pair of goals to leave the score at 5-3
with 7:16 remaining in the first half, but Salisbury then began the
aforementioned run, scoring two goals to tie the score at 5-5 going
into the break.
The Sea Gulls continued their streak, scoring five goals to open
the second half and extend their lead to 10-5 with 23:10 on the
clock. During the run, SU received three goals from junior
midfielder Alyssa Fowler (Odenton, Md./Arundel) and one apiece from
sophomore attacker Katie Bollhorst (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's)
and senior attacker Logan Bilderback (Arnold, Md./Broadneck).
Megarel put an end to the Salisbury run at the 22:09 mark, as
she recorded an unassisted goal for her 100th career
point to leave the score at 10-6. W&L pulled to within three
goals (11-8) after Megargel connected on a free position shot but
could get no closer as Salisbury claimed the 12-9 victory.
For the game, Salisbury led W&L in shots (21-19), ground
balls (16-12) and draw controls (12-11).
The Generals were led by Megargel, who finished the day with
four goals. Senior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore,
Md./Bryn Mawr) added a goal and a game-high five caused turnovers,
while first-year midfielder Alex Van Horn
(Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) chipped in a goal and a game-high six
draw controls.
The Sea Gulls were paced by senior attacker Trish DiGirolomo's
(Davidsonville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) five points (1g, 4a),
while Fowler and Bollhorst each added three goals.
In net, W&L's Katharine Farrar (Lexington,
Va./Episcopal) played all 60:00 with seven saves, while SU senior
netminder Julie Ann Caulfield (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) also
played the duration, stopping nine shots.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, as they host No. 7
Cortland State at 4:30 pm.
