Wilton Megargel
(Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) scored the game-winning
goal in overtime as the No. 15 Washington and Lee women's lacrosse
team topped No. 16 Mary Washington, 18-17, on Sunday afternoon at
the Battleground Athletic Complex.
The contest featured a high-scoring first half, with both teams
combining to score 19 goals. Mary Washington (2-1) got on the
board first, collecting the opening draw control and finding the
net off a shot by Catherine Kennedy to take a 1-0 advantage.
W&L (1-0) responded with goals from first-year attacker Margaret Klein (North
Andover, Mass./Brooks) and Megargel just 13 seconds apart to gain a
2-1 edge with 28:17 remaining in the first half.
The Eagles netted the next goal of the game to knot the score at
2-2 with 23:29 left in the opening stanza, but senior midfielder Emmy Mathews
(Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) responded with a goal under one minute
later to give the Generals the lead (3-2), one they would not
surrender the remainder of the half.
The Generals extended their lead to as many as three goals (6-3)
at the 13:00 mark, but UWM climbed back, pulling to within one goal
(6-5) at the 13:21 mark. However, W&L scored the next four
goals of the contest, including two from Mathews, as it extended
its lead to six points (11-5) with 4:59 remaining in the opening
half, entering the break with an 11-8 advantage.
The Generals maintained their lead in the early in the second
half, never letting the Eagles come closer than two goals and
extending their lead to as many as four goals (16-12) off a free
position goal by junior attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis,
Md./Annapolis) with 20:56 remaining in the contest.
However, Mary Washington reeled off five of the game's final six
goals to tie the game at 17-17 and send it to overtime. The rally
included three goals by Kennedy, including the shot that tied the
game to send it to extra time at the 3:56 mark.
Megargel netted her game-winner at the 2:26 mark in the extra
session, as the Generals claimed their first victory of the 2011
campaign.
The Generals were led by Mathews, who finished with five goals
and an assist, while Megargel added three goals and two
assists.
Kennedy paced UMW with a game-high seven goals and one assists,
and Allie Kimmelman chipped in two goals and five assists.
Senior goalie Katharine Farrar (Lexington,
Va./Episcopal) played the entirety in net for W&L, stopping 11
shots en route to earning the win. UMW keepers Danni Guigli and
Kathryn Stiltz shared time in net, with Guigli taking the loss
after playing 38:08 and recording eight saves. Stiltz played 27:52
in goal, stopping four shots.
W&L returns to action on Thursday as they travel to Sewanee
for a 5:00 pm contest.
