Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior Britten Mathews (Richmond,
Va./Collegiate) led the 15th-ranked Washington and Lee
women's lacrosse team with five points as it defeated
Christopher Newport, 16-7, on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
Both teams exchanged goals to open the first half and leave the
score knotted at 2-2 with 22:59 remaining. However, the Generals
(14-4) recorded seven unanswered goals over the rest of the opening
stanza to secure a 9-2 lead at the half. Sophomore attacker Maddie
McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and junior attacker Wilton
Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) notched
two goals apiece during the span, with W&L also collecting
goals from senior attacker Meredith Freeman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS),
junior attacker Kate Speare (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and
Britten Mathews.
CNU (13-6) tallied the first marker of the second half from
first-year midfielder Becca Geist (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) to
pull the Captains to within six points (9-3), but Freeman added a
goal just 21 seconds later to put the Generals back up by seven
points (10-3) with 28:58 remaining. Christopher Newport added five
additional goals in the second half but never came closer than six
goals as W&L cruised to the nine-goal victory.
W&L was paced by Britten Mathews, who finished the contest
with five points off of three goals and two assists. The Generals
also received three-goal performances from Megargel and McKaig,
while Freeman and junior midfielder Kate Donnelly (Houston,
Texas/St. John's School) each added two goals. Junior
Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played all 60:00 in
net, stopping eight shots.
CNU was led by Geist and junior attacker Meghan Harkey
(Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) who finished with two goals
apiece. The Captains also received goals from junior midfielder
Kaitlin Quigley (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley), first-year
attacker Grace Valentine (Alexandria, Va./Mt. Vernon) and
first-year midfielder Rachel Tomlinson (Springfield, Va./West
Springfield). Senior Gayle Robinson (Reston, Va./South Lakes)
played the entirety in net, turning aside 13 shots.
The Generals will return to action in the NCAA Division III
Women's Lacrosse Tournament. Opponent, date and time are TBD.
