Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The 15th-ranked Washington and Lee
women's lacrosse team used an 11-0 run that covered both
halves as they cruised to a 16-4 victory over Randolph-Macon in
semifinal action of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference
women's lacrosse tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Watt
Field.
W&L (12-4) assumed a 2-0 lead with 22:08 remaining in the
first stanza off of goals from sophomore attacker Maddie McKaig
(Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and junior attacker Wilton Megargel
(Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield), but the Yellow
Jackets (8-5) recorded their first goal of the contest from senior
midfielder Logan Pomeroy (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) to bring
the score to 2-1 with 17:57 remaining.
The Generals received a tally from junior midfielder Emmy
Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) to extend their lead to 3-1 with
13:56 remaining in the first stanza. However, R-MC tallied the next
two goals from senior midfielder Kelly Cramer (Charlottesville,
Va./Albemarle) and junior attacker Erin Clare Cassidy (Potomac,
Md./Holton-Arms) to knot the game at 3-3 at the 9:37 mark.
W&L started its 11-0 run with 5:49 remaining in the first
half by recording three goals, including two from Megargel and one
from McKaig, to take a 6-3 lead at the half.
A quick strike from senior attacker Meredith Freeman (St. Louis,
Mo./MICDS) just 41 seconds into the second half kept the
Generals' streak alive, as they would go on to record the
next eight goals to assume a 14-3 lead with 10:42 remaining in the
contest and cruise to the 12-goal victory.
The Generals were led by McKaig (3g, 2a) and Megargel (5g), who
both finished the contest with five points while also tying
career-highs in points (McKaig-5) and goals (Megargel-5) in a game.
Senior attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) tallied
three goals in the contest, while sophomore attacker Alli Shearin
(Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) finished with two goals. Junior
Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played the entirety in
net, stopping eight shots.
R-MC was paced by Cassidy, who finished the game with two goals.
Junior Alex Flammia (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) played all
60:00 in net, recording 13 saves.
The Generals will return to action on Saturdayas they host
Lynchburg College in the ODAC Championship game. The time is
to be announced.
