Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team had
its 2010 season end on Sunday morning with an 8-3 loss to
fifth-seeded Lynchburg in an ODAC Tournament game that took two
days to complete at City Stadium.
The No. 6 Generals were trailing the No. 5 Lynchburg Hornets,
7-1, when play was suspended due to rain before the Generals came
to bat in the seventh inning. The game was resumed at 11:00 am on
Sunday morning in the top of the seventh inning.
Lynchburg (23-14-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI
double by Brock Shiflett before W&L tied the score at 1-1 in
the third inning when senior catcher Will
Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) singled home first-year
shortstop Jonathan
Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day).
The Hornets responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame,
including a two-run double by Shiflett to take a 4-1 lead. LC then
added a single run in the fifth and a pair of runs in the sixth
before play was suspended.
When play resumed, the Hornets scratched across a run in the
bottom of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by second baseman
Jordan Watkins to extend LC's advantage to 8-1.
After retiring the first six batters that he faced, LC's Josh
Youngman ran into trouble in the ninth inning as W&L tallied a
pair of runs on an RBI single by senior first baseman Hunter
Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft School) and an RBI double by senior
third baseman Jim
Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) to pull W&L
within five runs at 8-3.
However, Jared Milner relieved Youngman with two outs in the ninth
and got sophomore designated hitter
Alston James (Columbia,
S.C./Hammond) to fly out to left to end the game.
Senior Chuck
Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) started on one days rest
for W&L and took the loss (4-6) as he allowed five runs on nine
hits and one walk with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work. He
did pitch to two batters to lead off the fifth inning.
Matt Morgan earned the win (4-0) for Lynchburg as he surrendered
just one run on six hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts
in 6.0 innings.
Plantholt finished 3-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Generals at the
plate. Lewis finished 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Stutts was
2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored and senior second baseman
John Ditore (Seattle,
Wash./Bishop Blanchet) and sophomore centerfielder
Mike Decembrino
(Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) both singled and scored a run.
Lynchburg's top five hitters went a combined 11-for-19 with eight
runs and seven RBIs to pace the Hornets. Leftfielder Mike Walters
was 2-for-5 with two runs, centerfielder Cameron Grant was 2-for-5
with two runs scored and an RBI. Rightfielder Jeff Taylor had two
hits in five at-bats with two walks, three runs scored, one RBI and
a stolen base. Shiflett was a perfect 3-for-3 with two walks, four
RBIs and a run scored and first baseman Chris Colquhoun was 2-for-3
with an RBI.
At the conclusion of play, Stutts and Plantholt were both named to
the all-tournament team. Stutts hit .500 (6-12), with three walks,
three runs scored and two stolen bases in W&L's four tournament
games, while Plantholt was 6-for-16 (.375) with a double and three
runs driven in.
The Generals conclude their season with an overall record of 14-19
and Lynchburg advances to the ODAC Championship where it will face
Bridgewater at 1:00 pm.
