Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon pounded out 22
hits en route to a 15-3 win over the sixth-seeded Washington and
Lee baseball team on day two of the ODAC Tournament at City Stadium
in Lynchburg on Friday afternoon.
R-MC (18-15) tallied five runs in the second inning and added
two runs in the third to take a 7-0 lead.
W&L (13-18) benefited from a pair of Yellow Jacket errors in
the fourth inning to load the bases with no outs. Following a
sacrifice fly by senior first baseman
Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford,
Conn./Taft School) that made the score 7-1, R-MC's Michael
Helbig induced a groundout out and a foul out to get out of the
inning with just the one run surrendered.
The Yellow Jackets then scored five more runs in the bottom of the
frame to assume a 12-1 lead in cruising to the 12-run
victory.
Sophomore
Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) took the
loss (4-2) for the Generals as he allowed seven runs (3 earned) on
10 hits and one walk in 3.0 innings.
Helbig improved to 4-2 with the win as he allowed just four hits
and one run (unearned) with four strikeouts.
At the plate, the Generals were led by senior second baseman John
Ditore (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet), who finished 1-for-3 with
a run scored. Senior third baseman
Jim Plantholt (Pylesville,
Md./North Harford) and first-year shortstop
Jonathan Stutts
(Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) were both 1-for-3 and
first-year outfielder
Joe Scalzo (Ridgefield, Conn./Brunswick)
drove in two runs with a double in his only plate appearance.
For R-MC, third baseman Adam Carpenter was 3-for-4 with a double,
three runs scored and two RBIs. Shortstop Ryan Hughes was 2-for-4
with four RBIs and a run scored, centerfielder Brian Jordan
finished 2-for-5 with two runs driven and one run scored while
rightfielder Jeb Weymouth had three hits in four at-bats and drove
in one run and scored twice.
With the loss, the Generals will await the loser of No. 3
Hampden-Sydney vs. No. 5 Lynchburg. W&L will take on the loser
of that game on Saturday at 11:00 am at City Stadium.
