Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New
Trier) allowed two runs over 6.1 innings and senior catcher Will
Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C Flora) doubled and drove in two runs as
the sixth-seeded Washington and Lee baseball team upset No. 1
Bridgewater, 7-2, in day one action of the ODAC Tournament on
Thursday afternoon at City Stadium in Lynchburg.
Davidson was sharp into the seventh inning as he surrendered
two runs on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts to earn
his third straight win in the ODAC Tournament dating back to last
season. He improved to 4-5 on the season.
Senior first baseman
Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft
School) put W&L (13-16) on the board with a solo homerun to
right in the second inning.
The Generals extended their lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning as
sophomore centerfielder
Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury)
singled in a run and later scored on a Bridgewater throwing
error.
W&L's lead bulged to 7-0 in top of the seventh as senior
second baseman
John Ditore (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet) had an
RBI single, Lewis drove in two runs with a base hit and first-year
shortstop
Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day)
scored an a throwing error.
Despite advancing a runner to scoring position in each of the
first five innings, the Eagles (19-18-1) did not dent the
scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh inning as they loaded
the bases with one out on a walk and a pair of singles. Andy
Chrismer then drove in a pair of runs with a single to make it
7-2.
Lewis finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Generals.
Decembrino had two hits in five at-bats, drove in a pair of runs
and scored twice, Serenbetz finished 2-for-4 with the solo homerun
and Stutts was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Junior
Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) relieved Davidson
and pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed two hits
and struck out three.
For Bridgewater, designated hitter Kevin Kirk finished 2-for-4,
second baseman Alex Nuttycombe was 2-for-4 with a run scored and
Chrismer finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Drew Elkins took the loss for Bridgewater as he allowed seven runs
(6 earned) on 11 hits and one walk with five strikeouts in 7.0
innings. Joseph Lucas pitched the final two innings for the Eagles,
he did not allow a baserunner and struck out one.
With the win, the Generals advance to face the loser of the No. 3
Hampden-Sydney vs. No. 4 Randolph-Macon matchup on Friday at 3:00
pm.
