Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore attacker Alli Shearin (Essex
Fells, N.J./West Essex) recorded a career-high six goals as the
Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team topped Guilford,
20-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (11-4, 8-0 ODAC) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the
opening 22:23 of the contest, including two goals apiece from
senior attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and
junior midfielder Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John's
School).The Quakers (6-9, 3-5 ODAC) added a goal from senior
attacker Carrie Ernst (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) at the 20:35 mark,
but W&L went on to outscore GC, 8-2, and assume a 15-3 lead at
the half.
W&L tallied five goals in the second half, with Shearin
collecting four of her six goals in the stanza, as it cruised to
the 14-goal victory to remain unbeaten in ODAC competition this
season.
Shearin led the Generals with seven points off of six goals and
one assist, while senior attacker Meredith Freeman (St. Louis,
Mo./MICDS) finished the contest with two goals and two assists.
Junior attackers Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St.
Anne's-Belfield) and Ellie Van Sant (Chevy Chase, Md./The
Taft School), sophomore attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis,
Md./Annapolis) and Britten Mathews all finished with three points.
Netminders junior Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) and
sophomore Jennifer Linder (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) split time
in net, combining for three saves with Farrar claiming the win.
Earnst paced the Quakers with two goals, while junior attackers
Hannah Merrell (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) and Kaitlin
Feeney (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan), first-year midfielder Caroline
Reeves (Greensboro, N.C./Early College at Guilford) and senior
attacker Ellie Merrit (Gaithersburg, Md./Sandy Springs Friends) all
finished with a single goal. Goalkeepers senior Alyzza-May Callahan
(New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) and first-year Liza Mettler
(Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Beaumont School) shared time in net,
combining for four saves while Callahan took the loss.
The Generals will return to action on Apr. 28 when they host a
semifinal game of the ODAC women's lacrosse championship
after earning the number one seed and a first-round bye. Opponent
and time are TBD.
