Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Senior attacker Meredith Freeman (St.
Louis, Mo./MICDS) recorded an unassisted marker with 6:23 remaining
to lift the 14th-ranked Washington and Lee women's
lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over Randolph-Macon College on
Sunday afternoon in Ashland.
R-MC (7-4, 5-3 ODAC) jumped out to an early lead after
back-to-back goals from Erin Clare Cassidy and Emily Kent just
under a minute apart to take a 2-0 lead with 28:05 remaining in the
first half. However, the Generals (10-4, 7-0 ODAC) responded with
two goals from sophomore midfielder Christina Benedetti (Derwood,
Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) to tie the game at 2-2 at the 23:13
mark of the first stanza.
The Yellow Jackets tallied a goal from Logan Pomeroy, but two
quick goals from Benedetti and junior midfielder Emmy Mathews
(Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) gave W&L its first lead of the game
(4-3) with 16:31 remaining in the first half.
R-MC reclaimed the lead (5-4) with markers from Elyse Cooper and
Pomeroy at the 11:20 mark of the first half. Both teams would then
exchange goals to leave the score in R-MC's favor (6-5) with
5:25 remaining, but W&L tallied goals from sophomore attacker
Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Benedetti to close out
the half and assume a 7-6 lead.
The Generals recorded the first goal of the second stanza from
junior midfielder Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John's
School) to take their largest lead of the game (8-6) with 22:55
remaining in the contest. However, the Yellow Jackets received two
goals from Cassidy to tie the game (8-8) at the 6:23 marker.
Freeman then recorded the game-winning goal just 10 seconds later,
as W&L secured the 9-8 victory and improved to 7-0 against ODAC
competition this season.
W&L was led by Benedetti, who tallied a game-high four
goals. McKaig finished the day with two goals, while Emmy Mathews,
Freeman and Donnelly each finished with a single goal. Junior
goalkeeper Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) recorded
60:00 in net, stopping eight shots while recording the win.
R-MC was paced by Cassidy's hat trick, while receiving two
goals apiece from Cooper and Pomeroy. Goalkeeper Alex Flammia
played all 60:00 in net, recording five saves.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday as they host Guilford
College for a 5:00 pm contest.
