Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team scored 12
runs over the first three innings and ran away with a 17-3 victory
over Southern Virginia at Cap'n Dick Smith Field on Tuesday
afternoon.
W&L (10-11) tallied three runs in both the first and second
innings, including two-RBI singles from junior rightfielder Anthony
Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) and sophomore
centerfielder Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), to take a
6-0 lead heading to the third.
Aided by a pair of fielding errors by the Knights (14-10),
W&L tallied six runs in the third inning, including two-run
single off the bat of sophomore leftfielder C.J. Thompson (Ponte
Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease), to assume a 12-0 lead en route to the
14-run victory.
Senior Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) started for
W&L and picked up his second win (2-3) of the season as he
tossed five shutout innings. He allowed just four hits and one walk
with three strikeouts. As a team, W&L limited the Knights to
just six hits and only walked two batters.
Decembrino led the Generals with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate.
He also drew one walk and drove in four runs and scored four times.
Thompson finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored,
first-year shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte
Country Day) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Cardona finished
the three runs driven in.
First-year catcher Trager Hintze (Ivins, Utah/Snow Canyon)
finished 2-for-2 to lead the Knights. Senior Darrell Brown (Window
Rock, Ariz./Window Rock) added a double and a run scored for SVU.
Senior Jake Johnson (Phoenix, Ariz./Greenway) started for SVU
and took the loss as he allowed eight runs on eight hits and two
walks in 2.0 innings of work.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to
Bridgewater for a 4:00 pm contest.
