Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The 17th-ranked
Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team opened up a 7-0 lead
less than 13 minutes into the game as it cruised to a 20-8 victory
over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Foster Field.
W&L (5-3, 3-0) tallied two goals apiece from junior
midfielder Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John's), junior
attacker Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's
Belfield) and sophomore attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis,
Md./Annapolis) and one marker from senior attacker Britten Mathews
(Richmond, Va./Collegiate) over the opening 12:30 to assume a 7-0
lead. Virginia Wesleyan (3-5, 2-1) added two markers from Sarah
Phelan and Courtney Shelton to pull the Marlins to within five
(7-2) with 12:35 remaining. However, the Generals went on to
outscore the Marlins, 6-1, over the remainder of the first stanza
to assume a 13-3 lead at the half.
The Blue and White added seven more goals in the second half,
including five unanswered markers to open the stanza, as they
cruised to the 12-goal victory.
The Generals were paced by senior attacker Meredith Freeman (St.
Louis, Mo./MICDS) and junior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore,
Md./Bryn Mawr), who recorded four goals apiece. Donnelly added
three goals, while McKaig, Britten Mathews and Megargel each
tallied two goals. W&L goalkeepers junior Katharine Farrar
(Lexington, Va./Episcopal), first-year Alex Hamill (Darien,
Conn./Darien) and sophomore Jennifer Linder (Moorestown,
N.J./Moorestown) all saw time in net for the Generals, combining
for four saves with Linder claiming the win.
The Marlins were paced by Tara Harding and Ally Doane, who each
tallied two goals. Goalkeepers Brittany MacKnew and Michelle Mace
shared time in net, totaling six saves.
The Generals return to action on Tuesday as they host Union
College for a 4:30 pm contest.
