Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team earned a
split of an afternoon doubleheader with Roanoke College on Tuesday
afternoon. W&L dropped game one, 4-2, and bounced back with a
6-0 victory in the nightcap.
RC (6-8, 2-2) tallied four runs in the fourth inning of the
first game and held on for the 4-2 win as the Generals (4-7, 2-3)
tallied a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning on a
two-RBI single by senior first baseman Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford,
Conn./Taft School) with two outs remaining.
Roanoke's starter, Cody Kidd, earned the win (3-1) for the
Maroons as he allowed four hits in four scoreless innings of work.
He allowed four hits and struck out three without issuing a walk.
Mark Manthe led the Maroons at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a
run scored and two RBI. Rus Shefte added a two-run single as well.
Senior Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) took the loss
for the Generals to fall to 0-3 on the season. He allowed four
earned runs on eight hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. At the
plate, the Generals were paced by Serenbetz, who finished 2-for-3
with a pair of RBI. First-year shortstop Jonathan Stutts
(Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) added one hit in three
at-bats and scored a run.
In game two, sophomore Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid
Jesuit) limited the Maroons to just three hits in six scoreless
innings while striking out six. Junior Gregg Laswell (Houston,
Texas/Memorial) nailed down the save with three scoreless innings
of relief, allowing one hit and striking out three.
W&L, which jumped up 4-0 in the first inning was paced by
junior rightfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut
Hill), who finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore leftfielder C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease)
added two hits in four at-bats and scored one run.
Chris Caupto took the loss for the Maroons, allowing five runs
(four earned) on six hits in three innings of work. Cameron
Travalini, C.J. Poad, and Caylen Baire singled for Roanoke.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they host
Stevenson at 3:00 pm.
