Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. -- The No. 16 Washington and Lee women's lacrosse
team recorded six unanswered goals in the second half as it
defeated No. 17 Mary Washington, 16-10, on Saturday afternoon at
the W&L Turf Field.
With the Generals (4-2) leading, 9-8, with 22:27 remaining in
the contest, W&L opened up the game, recording six unanswered
goals over the next 4:53 to secure the 14-8 lead with 17:34
remaining in the contest. Junior attacker Wilton Megargel
(Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) led the Generals during
the streak, recording three goals, while junior midfielder Emmy
Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) chipped in two goals. The Eagles
(4-2) pulled to within four goals (14-10) with 16:06 remaining but
could get no closer as W&L walked away with the six-goal
victory.
The first half of the game saw three ties and four lead changes
between the two squads, but Emmy Mathews would record a goal with
1:48 remaining in the first stanza to give the Generals the 7-6
lead at the half.
W&L was led by Emmy Mathews, who recorded four goals and two
assists on the day. Megargel added three goals and two assists.
Junior goalie Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played
all 60:00 in net for the Generals, allowing 10 goals while stopping
11 shots.
Mary Washington was paced by junior attacker Katie Wallis
(Cypress, Texas/Cy-Creek), who tallied four goals, while senior
attacker Brittany Butler (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) added three
goals and an assist. First-year goalkeeper Leigh Ann Redefer
(Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) played 40:48 in net for the Eagles,
allowing 12 goals while stopping three shots. Fellow first-year
goalkeeper Kathryn Stiltz (Marietta, Ga./Walton) recorded 19:12
between the pipes, allowing four goals and recording two saves.
The Generals will return to action on Wednesday as
they host No. 15 Cortland State at 4:30 pm.
