Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The 19th-ranked Washington
and Lee women's lacrosse team used a nine-goal run across
both halves to produce a 14-6 victory over St. Mary's (Md.)
on Saturday afternoon at Seahawk Stadium.
St. Mary's (0-1) jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the opening 10:14
of the game on a pair of goals by sophomore midfielder Lauren
Bennett and two assists from junior midfielder Aubrey Mirkin.
Junior attacker Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St.
Anne's-Belfield) began the Generals' (1-1)
game-changing surge when she scored unassisted at the 18:09 mark.
She would tack on two more tallies, while senior attacker Britten
Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and first-year attacker
Elizabeth Bucklee (Princeton, N.J./Stuart Country Day) each scored
twice in the final 15:58 of the first half as W&L took a 9-3
lead into the break.
Britten Mathews scored twice in the opening 7:49 of the second
half to complete the run and give the Generals a commanding 11-3
lead with 22:11 remaining in the contest. Each team would post
three goals the rest of the way for the eight-goal final margin.
Megargel and Britten Mathews led W&L with four goals and one
assist each. Bucklee scored two goals, while junior midfielder Emmy
Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) chipped in one goal and one
assist. Junior Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played
all 60 minutes in goal for the Generals, recording 10 saves.
Bennett's two goals paced the St. Mary's offense,
while first-year midfielder Lauriann Parker notched one goal and
one assist. Mirkin finished with two assists and first-year Katie
Hammerer played the duration on goal, logging nine saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it travels
to Bridgewater for a 4:00 pm contest.
