SALISBURY, Md. – The 19th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener against third-ranked Salisbury University, 10-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

Salisbury (2-0) would open up the scoring just 1:33 into the game with a goal from attacker Kim Cudmore. W&L (0-1) would respond with a goal from sophomore attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) at the 4:21 mark, but the Sea Gulls would net with three consecutive goals to take a 4-1 lead with 12:46 remaining in the half. McKaig added her second goal of the match with 11:20 remaining, but SU would close out the first half with three more goals to take a 7-2 lead at the break.

Senior attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) opened the second half with a goal at the 1:25 mark to pull the Generals within four (7-3), but the Sea Gulls would add three more goals in the second half to secure the 10-4 victory.

Salisbury outshot W&L, 30-9, including 18-6 on goal and forced 29 Generals turnovers.

McKaig led the Generals with two goals, while Mathews and first-year attacker Elizabeth Bucklee (Princeton, N.J./Stuart County Day) each added one goal. Junior goalkeeper Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played all 60:00 in net for the Generals, recording eight saves while allowing 10 goals.

Salisbury was paced by four players recording two goals, including  Cudmore and midfielders Carrie Bray, Jessica Chmielewski and Aileen McCausland. Cudmore also added two assists, while Chimielewski notched one helper. Goalkeeper Julie Ann Caulfield also played the entirety in net, recording two saves while allowing four goals.

The Generals will return to action on Saturday as they play St. Mary's (Md.). Due to field conditions at St. Mary's, the game's location and time are to be determined.
