LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee
men's basketball team opened the game with a 14-0 run and
first-year guard Jeremy Adkins (Huntington, W. Va./Spring Valley)
scored a career-high 23 points as the Generals defeated Roanoke
College, 75-53, on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.
W&L (16-8, 8-7 ODAC) held the Maroons
scoreless for the game's first 6:59 in opening up a 14-0 lead
following a lay up from senior forward Ben Goetsch (Timonium,
Md./Gilman). RC (6-18, 3-12) scored it first basket at the 13:01
mark to make it a 14-2 contest and W&L promptly scored eight of
the game's next nine points to assume its largest lead of the
first half (19) at 22-3 with 10:08 left en route to a 34-22 lead at
the break.
W&L kept Roanoke at bay in the second
half, letting its lead slip below double digits just twice, the
last time coming on a layup from sophomore forward Michael McGeough
(Danville, Va./George Washington) with 14:53 to play that put the
score at 41-32 in favor of the Generals. One the ensuing
possession, junior guard Jason Cimino (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata)
answered with a three-pointer to put the Generals back up by 12
points and W&L never looked back in winning by 20 or more
points for the first time this season.
The two teams shot a nearly identical
percentage from the field, 40.4 percent (21-52) for Roanoke and
40.6 percent (26-64) for W&L, but the Generals out-rebounded
the Maroons, 43-29, including 15-5 on the offensive end.
Adkins connected on 5-of-7 three-pointers and
9-of-15 shot attempts overall in posting a new career-high in
points. He also added five rebounds. Goetsch notched his seventh
double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Senior
forward Zac White (Baltimore, Md./Park School) chipped in nine
points, five boards two blocks and two steals, while Cimino totaled
eight points and five assists.
Roanoke was led by sophomore forward Logan
Singleton (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley), who registered 15 points
and seven rebounds. Junior guard Matt Crizer (Covington,
Va./Alleghany) added points 10 points, five rebounds and four
steals.
The Generals will wrap up regular-season play
on Saturday when they travel to Eastern Mennonite for a 7:00 pm
contest. A W&L win combined with a loss by
Hampden-Sydney would give the Generals the No. 5 seed and a
first-round bye in the upcoming conference tournament. Should
W&L fall to the Royals, the Generals become the No. 6 seed and
would host a first-round game on Tuesday at 7:00 pm against Emory
& Henry.
