LEXINGTON, Va. -- Top-ranked Guilford College used a late 10-0 run and connected on 14-of-14 free throws down the stretch to hold off Washington and Lee in men's basketball action on Monday night at the Warner Center.

Following a three-pointer from junior guard Jason Cimino (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) that gave the Generals (15-8, 7-7) a 67-65 lead with 6:50 to play, the No. 1 Quakers scored the game's next 10 points to assume a 75-67 lead with 3:55 to play on a layup from senior center Tyler Sanborn (Mount Airy, N.C./Elkin). The Generals managed to pull within six points several times in the closing minutes, but the clutch free throw shooting of the Quakers (21-2, 12-2) sealed the victory.

The Generals found themselves down 14-4 with 14:41 to play in the first half before using a 14-3 run of their own to take an 18-17 lead on a three-pointer from first-year forward J.D. Ey (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) with 9:58 remaining. Neither team lead by more than three points until W&L closed out the first half on a 15-8 run, capped by a three-pointer from senior forward Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman) as the first-half buzzer sounded to give the Generals a 45-38 lead at the break.

Guilford took its first lead in the second half at 53-52 with 13:12 to play following a three-pointer from senior guard Rhett Bonner (Yadkinville, N.C./North Forsyth) and there were six lead changes and two ties over the next 5:22 until the Quakers made their game-clinching run.

W&L posted season-highs in three pointers attempted (34) and three pointers made (13) and shot 42.2 percent (27-64) for the game, while GC shot 48.3 percent (29-60) on the game. Both teams turned the ball over 11 times and Guilford had a slight edge in rebounding, 39-34.

W&L was led by Goetsch, who scored 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting and added seven rebounds. Senior forward Zac White (Baltimore, Md./Park School) chipped in 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks. Cimino and sophomore guard Kyle Bond (Boxborough, Mass./Brimmer and May) registered nine points apiece.

Sanborn led the Quakers with a game-high 23 points and 14 rebounds. Senior guard Clay Henson (Glen Alpine, N.C./Freedom) scored 21 points, including 12-of-13 shooting from the charity stripe. Junior forward Martin Stephenson (Cary, N.C./Cary) scored 13 points and Bonner and first-year guard Josh Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) tallied 12 points apiece.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they host Roanoke at 7:00 pm.
