W&L Women's Soccer Team Defeats Greensboro, 2-0

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team opened its 2009 season with a 2-0 victory over Greensboro at the Methodist College Soccer for a Cure Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals (1-0) got on board first when senior midfielder Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) recorded an unassisted goal in the 18th minute. Junior midfielder Laura Yungmeyer (Kingsport, Tenn./Dobyns Bennett) netted the second goal of the match in the 42nd minute to secure the win.

Sophomore netminder Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) played the duration and recorded four saves en route to posting the shutout. Greensboro (1-3) junior goalie Katie Allegro also played the entire contest, allowing two goals, and recording 12 saves.

The Generals return to the field on Sunday to face host Methodist College at the Methodist Soccer for a Cure Tournament. The start time is 2:00 pm.
