Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 2 Generals battle Mary Washington to midweek draw

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 2 Washington and Lee women's soccer team had a quick response to an opening goal and ended the game in a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening against Mary Washington.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Generals (9-0-1) took the game's first six shots across nearly 17 minutes of play, before the Eagles (8-1-2) found their first attempts of the game, getting three off in the span of 1:23.
  • With the game still scoreless in the 33rd minute, UMW's Olivia Ewing made a run into the box on the left side and scored from a tough angle near the edge of the box. Her shot made its way over a leaping Kate McEnroe and into the right-side netting.
  • W&L answered fast, however, as senior Emily Burke equalized 1:36 later. The Generals got two chances on corner kicks and cashed in on the second, as senior Stephanie Zawtocki found Burke's head on the back post from inside the six.
  • The second half saw just two shots on goal, both from the Generals. Junior Elizabeth Zimmerman and first-year Alex Van Arsdale put shots on target in the 70th and 72nd minutes, respectively, but UMW keeper Emily Orn was there for the stops.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Burke's goal was her eighth of the season, second most on the team, while Zawtocki tied Van Arsdale for the fourth-most assists (3) on the team this season. Burke and junior Megan Zimmerman paced the W&L offense with four shot attempts apiece.
  • Six different Eagles players combined to produce their side's six shot attempts. Ewing's goal in the 33rd minute was her first this season.
  • Orn finished the game with three saves in the Mary Washington goal.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Despite the draw, the Generals kept their overall undefeated and home unbeaten records intact. They have not lost in the last 27 games overall (24-0-3) and have 40 consecutive home games (33-0-7) without a loss.
  • The Generals' nine-game winning streak to begin the season ends as the second longest streak to begin a season in program history. The program got off to 10-0 starts in 1997 and the 2021 spring season.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Generals outshot the Eagles, 14-6, on the night, including 11-4 in the second half. The teams combined for just five shot attempts in the second half.
  • W&L took seven of the game's nine corner kicks and conceded two.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will play in their final non-conference game of the season on Friday when they travel to Sewanee for 4:00 p.m. EDT/3:00 p.m. CDT opening kick-off.
