SEWANEE, Tenn. – Junior
Elizabeth Zimmerman provided the offense for the second-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team, as she scored once in both halves to lead the Generals to a 2-0 win at Sewanee on Friday and tie the best start to a season in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Zimmerman's first goal came in the 42nd minute to give the Generals (10-0-1) a lead just before halftime. She fired a shot from just outside the box that was too much for Sewanee (5-2-3) goalie Emilee Scott to handle near the left post.
- In the 64th minute, Zimmerman took control of a loose ball in the W&L offensive third and scored from even further out compared to her first goal. She placed her shot perfectly between the outstretched reach of Ashley Vinck and the crossbar.
- Junior Kate McEnroe came up with two saves for the Generals in the final 13 minutes to preserve the shutout and the win, including a leaping save with just under four minutes left to prevent a Josie Alexander shot from sneaking in under the crossbar.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- With her two goals, Zimmerman raised her season goal total to seven, with five of those goals coming in the last five games. She finished the game with four shots and two on goal.
- Junior Megan Zimmerman logged her team-leading sixth assist of the season on her sister's first goal, and she led the W&L offense with five shot attempts.
- McEnroe made three saves in the game to post her fourth shutout of the season and the team's eighth. She lowered her goals-against average for the season to 0.32 in over 800 minutes of action.
- Scott and Vinck split time in the Sewanee goal. Only Scott was able to make a save.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Generals improved to 10-0-1 with Friday's win, which ties the best start to a season in program history. The program posted a 10-0-1 record during the 2021 spring season, while the 1997 team was 10-1 through 11 games.
- Elizabeth Zimmerman joined her sister and senior Emily Burke as the only players with multiple game-winning goals so far this season. That trio has combined for nine of the Generals' 10 game-winning goals this year.
- In their final non-conference game of the season, the Generals extended their program-best unbeaten streak to a 28th consecutive game. They have 25 wins to three draws in that span.
- W&L is now 4-2 all-time against Sewanee in women's soccer. Friday's game was their first meeting since September 15, 2019, a 3-0 Generals win in Lexington.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals outshot the Tigers 11-4 for the game and 7-2 in the first half. Both teams put three shots on goal.
- Both teams also took three corner kicks in the game. All of Sewanee's came in the second half.
