NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 20th-ranked Washington and Lee women's
lacrosse team scored seven unanswered goals over the final 11:37 of
the contest en route to posting a 17-10 victory over Christopher
Newport on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va.
The Captains (13-6) scored two-straight goals in the opening 1:15
of the contest to take an early 2-0 lead. However, the Generals
answered back with three of their own, including two goals from
senior midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County),
to take their first lead of the game (3-2) at the 23:35 mark. CNU
junior defender Alyssa Burke found the back of the net just 46
seconds later to knot the game at 3-3, which was the first of four
ties over the final 22:49 of the first half. Christopher Newport
held a slight 8-7 halftime advantage.
The Generals (13-5) began chipping away at CNU's lead and opened up
the second half scoring with three-consecutive goals on the
strength of two tallies from junior attacker Britten Mathews
(Richmond, Va./Collegiate) to take a 10-8 lead at 20:35. CNU
responded with its only two goals of the second period to tie the
game at 10-10 with 18:22 remaining in the game, but W&L
proceeded with the aforementioned scoring barrage en route to the
seven-goal victory.
Mathews paced the Generals with six goals and dished out one
assist. Evans tallied three goals and two assists, while sophomore
midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) notched three
goals. Junior attacker Meredith Freeman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS)
tallied two goals, while senior midfielder Kelsi Robinson (West
Chester, Pa./Westtown) totaled one goal and two assists.
Sophomore midfielder Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John's
School) added one goal and one assist, while senior attacker Katie
Flippen (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) and first-year attacker
Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) chipped in one goal
apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Katharine Farrar (Lexington,
Va./Episcopal) played all 60 minutes and registered seven
saves.
CNU was led by sophomore attacker Meghan Harkey's three goals.
Burke and sophomore attacker Kaitlin Quigley registered two goals
apiece, while senior midfielder Katie Doherty chipped in three
helpers. Junior netminder Gayle Robinson played the entire
game between the pipes and totaled 12 saves.
The 20th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team now must
wait to see if they are awarded an at-large NCAA bid.
