W&L Women's Lax Wins Shootout With CNU, 17-10

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 20th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team scored seven unanswered goals over the final 11:37 of the contest en route to posting a 17-10 victory over Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va.

The Captains (13-6) scored two-straight goals in the opening 1:15 of the contest to take an early 2-0 lead. However, the Generals answered back with three of their own, including two goals from senior midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County), to take their first lead of the game (3-2) at the 23:35 mark. CNU junior defender Alyssa Burke found the back of the net just 46 seconds later to knot the game at 3-3, which was the first of four ties over the final 22:49 of the first half. Christopher Newport held a slight 8-7 halftime advantage.

The Generals (13-5) began chipping away at CNU's lead and opened up the second half scoring with three-consecutive goals on the strength of two tallies from junior attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) to take a 10-8 lead at 20:35. CNU responded with its only two goals of the second period to tie the game at 10-10 with 18:22 remaining in the game, but W&L proceeded with the aforementioned scoring barrage en route to the seven-goal victory.

Mathews paced the Generals with six goals and dished out one assist. Evans tallied three goals and two assists, while sophomore midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) notched three goals. Junior attacker Meredith Freeman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) tallied two goals, while senior midfielder Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) totaled one goal and two assists.  Sophomore midfielder Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) added one goal and one assist, while senior attacker Katie Flippen (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) and first-year attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) chipped in one goal apiece.  Sophomore goalkeeper Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played all 60 minutes and registered seven saves.
