W&L Baseball Falls to W&J, 8-3, in NCAA South Regional

SALISBURY, Md. -- Eighth-seeded Washington and Lee was eliminated from postseason play with an 8-3 loss to fifth-seeded Washington & Jefferson on day two of the NCAA Division III Baseball South Regional.

Washington & Jefferson (34-13) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning as they tallied five runs (one earned) on three singles, a pair of walks, a hit batter and one General error. All five runs were scored with two outs. The Presidents extended their lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning on an RBI single by junior leftfielder Jim Pasquine, followed by a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Mark Thomchick.

W&L finally got on the board in the eighth inning when senior centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) singled home junior third baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) to make it 7-1.

After W&J scored in the top of the ninth to make it 8-1, Washington and Lee scored a pair of runs in the bottom half on an RBI single by senior second baseman Byron Peyster (Washington, D.C./Maret) and a sacrifice fly by sophomore rightfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) to account for the final score of 8-3.

W&J first-year righthander David Trushel limited the Generals to just three hits over eight innings, allowing just one run in improving to 8-0 on the season. He walked two and struck out six.

Senior righthander Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) started and took the loss (4-3) for the Generals. He allowed seven runs (three earned) on seven hits and four walks in five innings of work. He struck out five.

W&L was led at the plate by McKelvey, who was 1-for-4 with an RBI. First-year outfielder Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) added a pinch-hit single and junior first baseman Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft School) had a double in his four at bats. Peyster and Cardona both finished 1-for-3 with an RBI

Pasquine and junior rightfielder Neil Pascarella both went 2-for-5 with and RBI and a run scored to lead the Presidents. Sophomore shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz added two hits in four at bats and scored a run.

The loss ends the Generals' season at 22-15, the seventh time in the last ten seasons that W&L has posted at least 20 wins. W&J advances to take on the winner of second-seeded Shenandoah vs. sixth-seeded York (Pa.).
