SALEM, Va. -- Top-seeded Roanoke used a four-goal spurt late in
the second half en route to defeating second-seeded Washington and
Lee, 11-9, in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship
game on Sunday at Kerr Stadium.
For W&L, the loss snapped a string of six-straight league
titles dating back to the 2002 season when Randolph-Macon claimed
the ODAC title.
The Generals jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the 19:16 mark on the
strength of two goals from senior midfielder Kelsi Robinson (West
Chester, Pa./Westtown). The Maroons then added back-to-back goals
and made it a three-goal game (6-3) at halftime.
RC opened up the second-half scoring with three-straight goals,
including two from junior midfielder Gina Valles to tie the contest
(6-6) at 24:32. The two teams then exchanged goals over the next
10:02 to make it an 8-8 contest with 12:03 remaining. However,
Valles scored unassisted just 49 seconds later to give Roanoke its
first lead of the game (9-8) and the Maroons held on for the
two-goal victory.
W&L was paced by Robinson, who tallied three goals and one
assist. Junior attacker Meredith Freeman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS)
notched two goals, while senior midfielder Colleen Evans
(Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County), sophomore attacker Wilton
Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield), sophomore
midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and first-year
attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) all chipped in
one goal each. Sophomore attacker Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St.
John's School) and junior attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond,
Va./Collegiate) chipped in one assist each. Sophomore Katharine
Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played 55 minutes in goal and
recorded four saves.
Valles led Roanoke with five goals and one assist. Junior
midfielder Paige Mason registered one goal and two assists, while
sophomore attacker Carolyn Miller added two goals. Senior
goalkeeper Katlyn Scarlett played all 60 minutes between the pipes
and recorded seven saves.
Robinson, Evans and Emmy Mathews all represented W&L on the
All-Tournament team, while Valles, Scarlett, Mason, Miller and
junior defender Carolyn Clark were named to the team from
Roanoke.
Roanoke (15-4) receives the ODAC's automatic bid to the NCAA
Tournament, while the Generals (12-5) must wait to see if they are
awarded an at-large bid.
The Generals return to action on Sat., May 2 when they travel to
