SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The 14th-ranked Washington and Lee women's
lacrosse team recovered from a 4-2 halftime deficit and tallied
nine consecutive goals in the second half as the Generals defeated
Colorado College, 13-9, on Saturday morning in Swarthmore, Pa.
W&L (11-4) got on board just 1:06 into the game when senior
midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge) scored on a
free-position shot. However, the Tigers tallied the next two goals
to take a 2-1 lead at 10:12. Evans scored again off of a feed from
senior midfielder Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) with
8:55 remaining in the first half to tie the game at 2-2, but
Colorado College scored the final two goals to take a 4-2 lead at
the break.
The Generals opened the second-half scoring with nine consecutive
goals aided by four tallies from sophomore midfielder Emmy Mathews
(Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and two goals apiece from senior
attacker Katie Flippen (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) and junior
attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) to take an 11-4
lead at 13:13. The Tigers (10-4) outscored the Generals, 5-2, down
the stretch, including a pair from senior midfielder Ali Zarlengo
and sophomore midfielder Claire Preston, but W&L held on for
the four-goal victory.
Washington and Lee was paced by Emmy Mathews' four goals. Evans
tallied three goals, while Flippen netted two goals and dished out
one assist. Britten Mathews and sophomore midfielder Wilton
Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) totaled two
goals apiece, while Robinson dished out two assists. Sophomore
Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played the first half
between the pipes and recorded four saves, while first-year
Jennifer Linder (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) played the final 30
minutes and registered three saves.
Colorado College was led by Zarlengo, Preston and junior midfielder
Kristin Rider, who all netted two goals each. Junior defender
Maggie Defanti, senior attacker Alexa Dougherty and junior attacker
Holly McHugh chipped in one goal apiece. Senior Jess Van Doren
played 56:32 between the pipes and registered nine saves, while
junior Valerie Cranmer played 3:28 and recorded two saves.
The Generals return to action on Saturday for the 2009 ODAC
semifinals. The Generals' opponent and the time of the game have
yet to be determined.
