No. 12 W&L Women's Lacrosse Edges Lynchburg, 11-10

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Sophomore midfielder Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) scored off an assist by sophomore midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) with 4:53 remaining to lift 12th-ranked Washington and Lee to an 11-10 victory over Lynchburg in ODAC women's lacrosse action on Monday evening at Shellenberger Field.

The Generals (7-4, 4-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 2:48 of the game on the strength of two goals from junior attacker Meredith Freeman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) and one from senior attacker Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown).

The Hornets (5-4, 0-2) tied the game at 3-3 with 24:48 left in the first half following a three-goal barrage over a span of 1:54, but W&L used its' own three-goal run for a 6-3 lead at 17:30. Junior attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored one goal and assisted on another during the stretch.

Lynchburg closed the first half with two-straight tallies, including one by Kathryn Ollice with just 24 seconds remaining, to make it a 6-5 game at the break.

The Generals opened the second half with two scores for an 8-5 lead just 4:05 in, but the Hornets again responded with a three-goal spurt, including a pair of goals from Morgan Logue, to tie the game at 8-8 with 17:33 left.

W&L again assumed the lead with free positions goals by Britten Mathews and sophomore midfielder Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John's) to take a 10-8 advantage with 12:43 to play, but Lynchburg fought back to knot the game at 10-10 with 6:12 to play, setting up Megargel's game-winner.

Freeman led W&L with four goals, while Britten Mathews had two goals and one assist. Senior attacker Katie Flippen (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) chipped in one goal and one assist and sophomore netminder Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) stopped three shots in 60 minutes of play.

Logue paced the Hornets with four goals, while Patty Sheahan and Deana Welsch tallied two goals apiece. Christina Tran played all 60 minutes between the pipes and totaled 13 saves.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Hollins for a 4:00 pm contest.
