No. 8 W&L Women's Lacrosse Defeats No. 13 Catholic, 10-9

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The eighth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in the first half en route to a 10-9 victory over 13th-ranked Catholic on Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium.

The Generals (2-0) got on board first when senior attacker Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) found the back of the net off of a feed from senior midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge) at 27:12. First-year attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) then scored unassisted just 16 seconds later, before the Cardinal's got on board with an unassisted goal from Kate Robinson.

W&L then tallied three-straight goals to assume a 5-1 lead with 7:31 left in the first half. Catholic (0-1) answered back with a scoring outburst of its own, netting three-consecutive goals, to slice the Generals' advantage to 5-4. McKaig added another tally with 30 seconds left in the half to make it a 6-4 game at the break.

Catholic opened the second half scoring when Laura Harring found the back of the net unassisted at the 22:48 mark to cut it to a 6-5 contest. Sophomore midfielder Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) then scored the next two goals to give W&L a three-goal cushion (8-5) at 21:22, but Catholic stormed back to cut the W&L lead to 9-8 with 12:59 remaining in the game. Evans provided the game-winning goal six minutes later off an assist from junior attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) to secure the victory.

The Generals were led by senior attacker Katie Flippen (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy), who tallied two goals and one assist. Robinson, McKaig and Donnelly also registered two goals apiece, while Evans notched one goal and one assist. Sophomore Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) and first-year netminder Jennifer Linder (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) split time in goal and combined to stop 15 shots.

The Cardinals were led by Haring and Katie Bitonti, who amassed two goals and one assist each. Katie Buonpastore added two goals, while Kate Robinson chipped in one goal and one helper. Melissa Brashear played the duration of the contest and recorded seven saves.
