LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Ben Goetsch
(Timonium, Md./Gilman) scored a game-high 20 points to lead the
Washington and Lee men's basketball team to a 64-52 win over
Catholic on Monday night at the Warner Center.
Goetsch was one of three Generals to score in
double figures and W&L limited CUA to just 35.6 percent (21-59)
shooting for the game in improving to 4-1 on the season. Catholic
slips to 3-3 with the loss.
The Generals held a two-point advantage
(12-10) with 9:30 remaining in the first half and proceeded to
outscore the Cardinals 18-5 over the next 7:50 to assume a 30-15
lead with 1:40 left in the opening half. However, CUA reeled off
eight quick points and cut W&L's lead to just eight
(30-22) at the break.
Catholic's scoring run continued as the
Cardinals outscored W&L, 10-1, to start the second half and
assume their first lead of the game (32-31) with 16:41 to play.
CUA's largest lead of the game came at 40-36 with 11:38 left,
but W&L posted a 19-4 scoring run of its own, with Goetsch and
senior forward Zac White (Baltmore, Md./Park School) scoring six
points apiece during the run, to take a 55-44 lead with 4:57
remaining en route to the 12-point victory.
Goetsch connected on 9-of-13 shot attempts in
scoring at least 20 points for the third time this season. He also
added eight rebounds. White totaled 16 points and six rebounds,
first-year forward J.D. Ey (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) posted 13
points and first-year center Taylor Gilfillan (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe)
grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in 14 minutes of play.
For the game, W&L forced CUA into 15
turnovers and connected on 14-of-23 free throws, while the
Cardinals made just 6-of-7 charity tosses.
Senior forward Jason Banzhaf (Livingston,
N.J./Seton Hall Prep) posted a team-high 19 points and grabbed five
rebounds for Catholic. Senior forward Matt Fazzini (Wayne,
Pa./Conestoga) chipped in nine points and four boards.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it
hosts Bridgewater at 7:00 pm.
