VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's basketball team rallied from a seven-point deficit with just over a minute remaining and had a potential game-winning layup blocked at the buzzer as Virginia Wesleyan walked away with a 71-70 win in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon at the Batten Center.
The Generals trailed 34-21 at the break and were down by as many as 14 points in the second stanza before chipping away at the VWC (9-5, 3-2) lead in the final minutes.
A layup by W&L senior guard Chris McHugh (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) made it 71-70 with nine seconds remaining and Marlin Norman Hassell went to the line for two shots with six seconds left. Hassell missed both tosses and junior forward Zac White (Baltimore, Md./Park School) rebounded the second miss and went coast-to-coast but was denied at the rim by VWC's Donald Vaughn as time expired.
The Generals (9-4, 2-2) committed just five turnovers in the contest, but could not overcome a 46-32 disadvantage on the boards and 53.3 percent (16-30) shooting from the foul line.
W&L was paced by senior guard Isaiah Goodman (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) and junior forward Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman), who scored 14 points each. McHugh chipped in 12 points and five rebounds.
Virginia Wesleyan was paced by Terrell Dixon's 21 points and 12 points and 19 rebounds from Quinton McDuffie. Hassell added 12 points as well.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Lynchburg College for a 7:00 pm contest.
