No. 11 Amherst Tops No. 6 W&L Women's Lacrosse, 10-8 in NCAA Second Round

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Junior attacker Amy Craig (Denver, Colo./George Washington) and senior attacker Maddie Hoeg (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) scored four goals apiece to lead the 11th-ranked Amherst women's lacrosse team to a 10-8 victory over sixth-ranked Washington and Lee in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Lancaster, Pa.

The Lord Jeffs (15-3) got on board first when Craig found the net unassisted at 26:52. The Generals answered back just 1:49 later when junior attacker Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) scored off an assist from senior attacker Laura Henson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) to knot the game at 1-1. W&L took its only lead of the game (3-2) at the 13:55 mark on a free-position goal by Henson, but Craig scored two-straight tallies to give Amherst the lead back (4-3) en route to a 6-4 advantage at the break.

Another Henson tally off a feed from senior attacker Christine Bender (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) just 47 seconds into the second stanza pulled the Generals to within one goal (5-4), but a Hoeg goal at 25:43 gave the Lord Jeffs another two-goal lead (6-4). W&L sophomore attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) sliced the AC lead to 7-6 when she scored on a free-position shot at 24:47, but Amherst went on a three-goal run with under seven minutes remaining to push out to a 10-6 lead in posting the win.

W&L was led by Henson, who notched two goals and two assists. Robinson registered two goals, while Bender added one goal and dished out one assist. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) played the entire contest and stopped five shots.

Sophomore midfielder Hannah Walker (Greenwich, Conn./Convent of the Sacred Heart) supplemented Craig and Hoeg's efforts for Amherst by notching one goal and one assist. Senior goalkeeper Linda McEvoy (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) played all 60:00 between the pipes and made four saves.

The loss ends Washington and Lee's season at 17-3 overall. Amherst advances to the quarterfinals, where it will face host Franklin & Marshall on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
