LEXINGTON, Va. -- The sixth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team closed the game with a four-goal spurt to post an 11-4 victory over fifth-seeded Randolph-Macon in the semifinals of the 2008 ODAC Tournament at Watt Field on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored two for the Generals first three goals to give W&L a 3-0 lead at 12:05 in the first half. Randolph-Macon got on the board when freshman attacker Erin Claire Cassidy (Potomac, Md./Holtom-Arms School) scored unassisted at 11:32. Each team found the back of the net twice as the Blue and White took a 5-3 edge into halftime.
The Generals (16-2) scored the first two goals of the second half, including a tally from Britten Mathews, to take a 7-3 lead at 10:35. The Yellow Jackets tightened the game to 7-4 off a goal from sophomore midfielder Logan Pomeroy (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) at 8:54, but W&L used the aforementioned run to claim its eighth-straight appearance in the ODAC finals.
W&L was paced by Britten Mathews' four goals. Freshman midfielder Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr), senior attacker Christine Bender (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and junior attacker Katie Flippen (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) each posted a pair of goals. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) played the duration for W&L, making six saves.
R-MC (6-10) was led by Pomeroy, who registered two goals. Senior goalkeeper Lindsay Schabert (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) played the entire contest and made 11 stops for the Yellow Jackets.Â
In the second semifinal, Roanoke defeated Virginia Wesleyan, 15-11, in a contest that was delayed over four hours due to inclement weather. The game began at Watt Field at 3:00 pm, but was completed at the W&L Turf Field at 9:35 pm.
The Generals will take on Roanoke in a rematch of the 2007 ODAC Finals on Sunday at Watt Field.
