Baseball vs. Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Lynchburg rightfielder David Gaines registered an RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning to oust Washington and Lee from the 2008 ODAC Baseball Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Lynchburg City Stadium.

The Generals took a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth off an RBI single from sophomore catcher WIll Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora), but the top-seeded Hornets forced extra innings with a sacrifice fly from first baseman Jon Crews and then snagged the victory in the bottom of the 12th with Gaines' single.

W&L owned a 5-1 lead entering the bottom of the seventh aided by an RBI single from sophomore third baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) in the second and an RBI double from Plantholt in the fourth. However, LC put three runs on the board in the seventh to cut the Blue and White's edge to 5-4 and then tied the contest (5-5) with an RBI single from leftfielder Mark Winston in the bottom of the eighth.

Plantholt led W&L with a 2-for-5 performance from the plate with a double and three RBI. Lewis went 2-for-5 with one RBI, while senior designated hitter Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) totaled two hits in four at-bats with one RBI. Senior righthander Steve Marcott (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) started the contest and went five innings, allowing four hits and one earned run. Plantholt was saddled with the loss, as he tossed the final 3.2 innings and gave up two hits and two earned runs.

Gaines batted 2-for-4 with one RBI for LC, while centerfielder Cameron Grant had two hits in five at-bats, along with two RBI. Catcher Chris Colquhoun also added two RBI on 1-for-3 hitting.
