WINCHESTER, Va. -- Senior rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) smacked a two-run double in the top of the ninth to lead the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 5-4 victory over Shenandoah on Wednesday afternoon at Bridgeforth Field.

The Hornets (17-12) took a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Generals quickly reclaimed the edge (2-1) in the top of the third added by a one-run triple from Madden. SU tied the game in the ensuing frame when catcher Kevin Brashears scored on a wild pitch from junior righthander Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery)

The score remained knotted at 2-2 until W&L's senior designated hitter Andy McEnroe (Hockessin, Del./Wilmington Friends) broke the tie with an RBI ground out in the top of the seventh. Shortstop Josh Simons plated two runs for the Hornets with a double in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-3 lead heading into the final inning.

Freshman leftfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) and junior centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) hit back-to-back singles in the top of the ninth and Madden doubled down the leftfield line, plating both baserunners. Senior lefthander Jeff Pharis (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) entered the game in the bottom of the ninth and picked up the save as he helped retire the SU batters and secure the win for W&L.

Madden led W&L with a 4-for-5 performance from the plate with a double, a triple and three RBI. Sophomore shortstop John Ditore (Shoreline, Wash./Bishop Blanchet) totaled three hits in five at-bats. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Nate Adkins (Ravenswood, W. Va./Ravenswood) improved to 3-0 on the season after hurling 2.0 innings and allowing three hits and two earned runs.

Simons led SU, batting 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while third baseman Jesse Henry went 2-for-4 from the plate, along with two doubles and one RBI. Righthander Scott Van Dusseldorp was saddled with the loss (1-0) after he threw 1.0 inning and allowed two hits and two earned runs.
