Mathews Leads No. 6 Generals to 18-6 Victory over Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) notched four goals to lead the sixth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to an 18-6 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Friday afternoon at Foster Field.

Mathews scored the first two goals of the contest to take a 2-0 lead at 28:07 before VWC got on board at 24:24 (2-1) when senior midfielder Jillian Boyd scored unassisted. W&L answered back when senior attacker Christine Bender (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) struck unassisted at 21:11 (3-1), but VWC's junior midfielder Aimee Sraver found the back of the net at 16:49 to cut it to a 3-2 game. The Generals used a three-goal spurt to take a 6-2 lead at 13:59, but junior attacker Bethany Adomanis found Boyd, who slipped one past senior goalkeeper Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) at 11:53 to make it a three-point game (6-3). W&L subsequently out-scored the Marlins 5-0 to take an 11-3 advantage at the break.

W&L (15-1, 8-0) began the second period with two goals, including one from senior midfielder Megan Slosson (Cockeysville, Md./Maryvale Prep) and Bender to take a 13-3 lead at 22:05. The Marlins retaliated at 20:55 (13-4) when Boyd scored unassisted, but could get no closer as the Generals cruised to the 12-goal victory.

Mathews' effort was supplemented by Slosson and sophomore midfielder Meredith Freeman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS), who both notched three goals. Senior attacker Laura Henson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) added two goals and dished out an assist. Tilbor and freshman Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) split time between the pipes and combined to stop seven shots.

VWC (11-5, 6-2) was led by Boyd, who tallied three goals. Adomanis added one goal and one assist, while Sraver and sophomore attacker Laura Norris each chipped in one goal apiece. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Sippel played the entire 60:00 and stopped nine shots.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when they take on second-ranked The College of New Jersey at 4:00 pm. The game will be played at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa.
