LEXINGTON, Va. – W&L senior catcher Dan Harris (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) hit 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Washington and Lee baseball team to an 11-1 victory over Southern Virginia on Thursday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
W&L (20-9) put up two runs in the opening frame off an RBI ground out from sophomore designated hitter Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) and an RBI single from junior second baseman Byron Peyster (Washington, D.C./Maret). Rightfielder Derek Snider (Lancaster, Calif./Antelope Valley) gave the Knights their lone run of the game with an RBI single, cutting the W&L lead to 2-1 in the top of the third, but the Generals responded with five runs in the ensuing frame as they cruised to the 11-1 win.
Lewis hit 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBI, while sophomore first baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) tallied two hits in four at-bats with a double and two RBI. Junior centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) went 2-for-3 with a triple and one RBI. Senior righthander Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) picked up the win (4-2) after he tossed five innings and allowed seven hits and just one earned run before giving way to the bullpen.
SVU (15-24) was paced by Snider, who went 2-for-4 from the plate with an RBI, and first baseman Luke Taylor (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Mesa CC) and designated hitter Jake Johnson (Phoenix, Ariz./Glendale CC). Taylor and Johnson each had two hits in four at-bats. Righthander K.C. Maughan (Beavercreek, Ore./Oregon City) was saddled with the loss. Maughan gave up nine hits and 11 earned runs in 4.2 innings of work.
The Generals return to action on Saturday when they conclude the regular season, hosting an ODAC doubleheader with Eastern Mennonite. The first game is slated to begin at noon.
