Baseball vs. Hampden-Sydney

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) batted 4-for-5 with four RBI as Washington and Lee won its eighth-straight game with a 7-4 win over Hampden-Sydney in ODAC baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Tigers (6-9, 1-2) got on the board in first as sophomore centerfield Ben Brawley's (Leesburg, Va./Loudon County) ground out plated sophomore designated hitter Alnor Rodriguez (Orlando, Fla./Hargrave Military Academy). However, Lewis smacked a two-run double to centerfield to give the Generals a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first. W&L then extended its lead to 4-1 with single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings off of an RBI single from Lewis and a solo homerun by junior second baseman Byron Peyster (Washington, D.C./Maret).

H-SC cut the Generals' advantage to 4-3 with an RBI single from junior leftfielder Hall Toledano (Asheboro, N.C./Asheboro) in the top of the sixth. The Tigers subsequently loaded the bases on two occasions in that frame, but the Blue and White induced a couple of ground outs and a pop-up to end the threat. W&L closed out the game by out-scoring the Tigers, 3-1, over the final three innings to secure the win.

The Generals (10-2, 3-0) were led by Lewis' performance, which included two doubles, and sophomore first baseman Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft School), who went 3-for-5 with a double and one RBI. Ditore had three hits in four at-bats and sophomore first baseman Jim Plantholt batted 2-for-4. Senior righthander Steve Marcott (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) picked up his first win of the season (1-0) as he hurled five innings of three-hit ball, allowing one earned run. Senior lefthander Jeff Pharis (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) was credited with the save after tossing two innings and surrendering no earned runs and no hits, along with three strikeouts.

Hampden-Sydney was paced by Toledano, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Rodriquez hit 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while senior catcher David Toney (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee Davis) had one hit in two at-bats, a double and one RBI. Sophomore righthander John West (Lanexa, Va./Lafayette) took the loss (0-1) for H-SC after he gave up eight hits and four earned runs in just 2.1 innings of work.

The Generals look to extend their winning streak on Saturday when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for an ODAC double-header. The first game is scheduled to start at noon.
