No. 8 W&L Women's Lacrosse Stymies Catholic, 17-11

LEXINGTON, Va.—The eighth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team used a four-goal spurt in the second period to pull away for a 17-11 victory over Catholic on Thursday afternoon at Watt Field.

W&L got on board just 10 seconds into the game as junior attacker Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) assisted on a goal from junior midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County). However, CUA answered back at the 25:04 mark on a goal by sophomore midfielder Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) off an assist from senior midfielder Marcy Cuneo (Haddonfield, N.J./Camden Catholic). The first half featured two additional ties and neither team led by more than two goals as the Generals carried a 7-5 lead into the half.

Each team began the second stanza with a goal before the Blue and White used a three-goal run for an 11-6 lead at 26:08. The Cardinals scored three of the game's next four goals, including a pair by Cuneo, to slice it to a three-goal game (12-9) at the 14:38 mark. However, W&L used the aforementioned run to push out a 16-9 lead with 8:47 remaining in posting the six-goal win.

W&L (10-1) was led by Robinson's three goals and five assists. Sophomore attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) tallied four goals, while Evans notched three goals and dished out one assist. Senior attacker Christine Bender (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) also added three goals. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) played the entire game between the pipes and registered 10 saves.

Catholic (5-4) was paced by Cuneo, who notched four goals and two assists and Robinson, who registered four goals and chipped in one assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Brashear (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) played 60:00 minutes and stopped four shots.

Washington and Lee returns to competition on Sunday as it travels to ODAC-foe Randolph-Macon for a 3:00 pm game.
